Puberty

Puberty is a stage of life where there is a profound change in an individual. Changes occur are biological, physical, psychological, emotional and behavioural. The driving factors behind pubertal changes are hormones, acting as chemical messengers being released from the brain and giving directions to other areas of the body. The aim of puberty is to culminate in mature body, and mind capable of reproduction. 


Common struggles seen at puberty include mood swings, acne, migraines, heavy periods, body pains, increases in injuries, fatigue and struggles at school. While it is crucial not to pathologize these normal developmental experiences, understanding their underlying causes can facilitate appropriate support and management. Striking a balance between acknowledging natural development and addressing issues that significantly impact the quality of life is imperative for fostering overall well-being during this transitional phase. 


Management strategies at puberty, for teenagers and those in their early 20s can include lifestyle awareness and knowledge, supplements, guidance around health eating/fuelling and sleep, but also medications. For example medications to help menstrual flow can include anti-inflammatories (low doses that can be bought at supermarkets), but also stronger ones which are available on prescription. For some individual periods still negatively impact quality of life. It is important to know there are many hormonal approaches available to improve distress.
