Our Approach

  • Do I need a referral from my GP to be seen?

You do not need a referral from your GP to be seen.  However if you have seen your GP then your GP may be able to start helping you with your health concerns.  We also prioritise GP referrals, as we believe that is important to support medical colleagues.

  • My GP has referred me. How do I get an appointment?

Our team will be in touch, however we do recommend you sending us an email to ensure that we have received the referral and fill in our registration form online.

  • Does my GP know that I have been seen at FemaleGP clinic?

We recommend your GP knows you have been seen to ensure continuity in your care.  We will only inform your GP that you have visited if you consent to this.

  • Will you see my husband?

No, sorry.  Our clinic services do not extend to individuals born male.  Please do enquire if you have any specific questions as we want to work with and support our rainbow community.

  • I have ADHD and autism, will you be able to see me?

Absolutely.  We are a neurodivergent friendly practice, and adapt our consultations and communication to suit all types of brains.

  • Will you see my daughter or grandmother?

Absolutely.  We have no age limit on who we see.  When you request an appointment we ask you to explain why you would like to be seen.  If we feel we aren’t the most appropriate service for you then we will let you know!  We see all ages because we believe womens health is a journey, a continuum of needs and there are many parallals throughout life.  Also, when you feel safe with a service we want to be able for you to feel that you can get support for your whānau too.

See the clinical conditions section for more information.

  • Do you manage general GP issues eg asthma, skin infections and anxiety?

We recommend that FemaleGP is not your enrolled practice.  Funded primary care services are better set up and more cost effective for supporting you through general health conditions.

See the clinical conditions section for more information.

  • I have a Community Services Card, do you offer a discount?

Sorry, we do not receive any government funding so we are not able to offer such discounts.

  • My condition is covered under ACC. Will I need to pay to see you?

There are some cases where ACC will fund your care.  Often this needs preapproval, so please discuss with your caseworker.

If your appointment does include an ACC approved issue then we do have an ACC contract which enables us to reduce some of our prices where possible.  We are able to submit ACC registration forms but not the ACC 18, ie work certificates.

  • Will you complete my WINZ Certification?

No, we do not complete these

  • Who are the doctors that work at the clinic?

Dr Samantha Newman is the main GP at the clinic.  Dr Sandra Spilg is consulting by telehealth from Christchurch.  She is using the approaches and resources created by Dr Sam.

  • Do you have payment plans?

We do not have formal payment plans, however we are happy to discuss cases on an individual basis.  Please ask us if you have any questions.  Your health is our priority.

  • I am not eligible for healthcare in Hawkes Bay, can I be seen at FemaleGP?

Absolutely! We know how hard it can be to access healthcare.  Our fees are the same for those eligible or non-eligible for healthcare.  If we refer/recommend investigations you will still need to pay for these, however we can discuss accordingly.

  • Do I have to live in Hawkes Bay?

No, you do not have to live in Hawkes Bay.  We offer telehealth services (phone, video and email) across the whole country.  We can send prescriptions and lab forms Nationwide too.

There are some public health services that we cannot refer to, therefore you may still need to see your local GP about some issues.

Sometimes a clinical examination is needed.  We either recommend a trip to Hawkes Bay, or that you see a local GP.  We are happy to work with your GP – we believe two minds are better than one!

  • Do I have to live in New Zealand?

We are only able to prescribe and request investigations for those who live in New Zealand, however we are happy to see and discuss health issues with anyone and offer plans of recommendation.  Knowledge is power!

  • Do you speak any other languages?

We can access telephone translation services if we are given advanced notice, this is preferred to family translating although they are welcome to attend!

  • Can I bring my partner, or friend with?

You may bring any support person you wish.  We understand that such appointments can be exhausting and our whānau are part of the health journey too.  If you are bringing along a small child, we will also do what we can to support you.
