Understanding trends in the results
Low levels may suggest malabsorption, particularly in conditions like pernicious anaemia, Crohn's disease, or after gastric surgery. Persistent low levels can lead to nerve damage and neurological symptoms. Regular monitoring is needed, particularly in older adults or those on long-term metformin or proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs).
