MHT and Fibroids

💡 What about HRT if you have fibroids?

Fibroids are estrogen-sensitive, so some types of HRT can cause fibroids to grow or symptoms to return, especially if unopposed estrogen is used.

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have HRT.

🗣️ “If you wouldn’t block the hormones to treat the condition — you can have HRT.”

– One of the world’s leading menopause experts

What that means:

If your fibroids aren't actively being treated with hormone blockers (e.g. GnRH), then HRT is usually appropriate — with the right type.

Transdermal estrogen + progesterone is often the best tolerated.

You may need individualised support to monitor symptoms (e.g. bleeding, pelvic pressure).

⚖️ The bottom line:

For most people, the benefits of HRT — especially for mood, sleep, bones, brain, and cardiovascular health — outweigh the risk of minor fibroid growth.
